Comic artist Tim Conrad talks with a fan at a St Louis area convention last year.
Tim A. Conrad began illustrating for Marvel Comics in the early seventies, doing adaptations of Robert E. Howard's Almuric, Savage Sword of Conan and Worms Of The Earth.
He then began illustrating stories of his own in Epic Illustrated (including the graphic novel Toadswart D'amplestone) as well as doing cover paintings. Throught the '80s and '90s he produced both stories and covers for many of the leading publishers.
It was during this time period that Tim's sons were born. Tim found himself having to get a real job. He found one in marketing, and became the vice president of a chain of banks in Illinois.
Tim was working steadily as an illustrator and also maintaining a full time position in marketing when in '95 he was run over by a 93-year-old driver and suffered a traumatic brain injury. This was crippling physically and mentally leaving Tim to face years of rehabilitation therapy.
Tim's attitude remained positive. Tim quotes John Lennon when asked about this traumatic life-changing event, saying, "life is what happens to you when you're making other plans."
Tim lives near his son Jude and has been married to his wife JoAnn for the last 18 years. He is happy to be attending conventions to recall his "glory days".
Green Bay dealers are happy they are not outside in the cold of March!
Occasionally one of the conventions will be featured in the local newspapers. When I find out about them, I'll post links to the online versions here. Let me know if a link goes dead since some papers only keep free versions of their articles online for a limited period of time
Artist Sean Forney does a sketch at the very first Toledo convention last February!
