Here is the current listing of small one day comic shows in the midwest, along with a few bigger ones. At these one day events you can find a variety of comics and related collectibles (such as action figures, non sports cards, videos and other items you might find in Previews). These are not NASCAR, Beanie Baby, sports card shows which have one guy who has a box of over priced Image and Valiant comics from the 1990s. Admission is either FREE or a couple of dollars, and parking is always FREE. You can find things you can't find anywhere else
Since it costs dealers a lot less to set up at these than it does at the big conventions you can often find some really good deals.
Although at any given point all events may not be on the schedule, I am currently running small cons in the following markets. Some markets cross state lines so they are being listed twice. If you are looking for an event in one of these areas and it is not currently listed check back, at some point it should be:
In addition to the ones listed above, in the past conventions have been held in the Chicago metro area (Bolingbrook and Arlington Heights), Topeka, KS, Decatur, IL and Lincoln, NE. Others cities may also be added at some point. Currently looking for a venue in Memphis, TN and Springfield, MO
Please buy the comics and take them home before reading them (you will not get stepped on)!
(8 May) The Peoria and Madison Comic conventions in July will both be at a new venue.
The Peoria con, the first in almost a year, will be held at the Ramada Inn on July 12. Located at 4400 N Brandywine Dr. the Ramada Inn is just down the road from the Jameson Inn, the old venue. The Jameson Inn is still in the process of remodeling and the work may not be done by July so they did not want to promise me the room. The sales manager there suggested a new venue.
The Madison con on July 26 will be at a brand new hotel, the Holiday Inn Express, located in the suburb of Verona. The address is 515 W Verona Ave in Verona. Verona Ave is also known as Business Rt 151 / 18. If you are coming from out of town take I-90 / I-39 to EXIT 142A (Beltline /US 12 west / US 18 west). Go west 9 miles to exit 258 (Verona US18 west /US151 south) towards Dodgeville. Go 4 miles to EXIT 81 Business Rt 151 & Business Rt 18). The hotel will be about 2 miles into town. This will be a bit further for some than the old venue but the same distance or closer for people living on the westside of Madison or suburbs such as Middleton and Fitchburg.
As some of you may recall we were forced to move at the last minute in March when the previous hotel in Madison double booked our room. I did not find out about this until 7:30 the morning of the convention and all things considered the day went rather well. I had the July 26 date reserved at the old location. That hotel's new sales manager was incapable of either FAXing or mailing me a contract to confirm the event in over a month of repeated attempts on her part. I am not really surprised. She was also the person who claimed to have left me several messages stating the room was double booked. She assumed it was all OK with me me when I did not return her calls. I did not get a single message from her.
(Updated May 8) As some of you may have noticed last time if you are coming to the St Louis con out in Chesterfield and live in Illinois or a good portion of St Louis city proper, I-64 (AKA Hwy 40 to some old timers) is undergoing major roadworks between the Mississippi River and the I-270 orbital. The construction is so bad that there is a portion of the road that is completely closed down. So make alternate travel plans to get there. I am guessing that many of the internet mapping sites are unaware of this and if you go by them you will encounter problems, have to take surface streets, possibly get lost and definitely wind up at the con later than you planned to. One dealer coming from Illinois in February did not arrive until 11AM because of this.
I-64 is closed down between the Mississippi River and the I-270 orbital!
I-64 is open between I-270 and Chesterfield and you should encounter no problems there.
To make it easier for fans from Illinois (and parts of Missouri) to get their comic fix, I have found a new venue for a convention to be held on the Illinois side of the river, the first of these will be held on August 3- note this is a Sunday. This location is the American Legion Post 365 located at 1022 Vandalia St in Collinsville. This is easy to get to, albeit not visible from the freeway. Take I-55/70 to EXIT 15A (IL-159) and go south 2 miles, this is well before the one way system in Collinsville city centre.
(Updated 8 May) Each of the first 3 months of 2008 had a new city with a convention. January saw the first one in Ft Wayne, IN and February had the first one Toledo, OH in the 21st century. Both of those as well as the first one in Green Bay, WI last weekend were well attended and with both fans and dealers going home happy. Another has been scheduled for Fort Wayne on June 8. Both Toledo and Green Bay will have another show sometime during the second half of the year
With the first three new cities all having gone well, I have scheduled a few more new cities. Had hoped to have one each month, problems getting a date at the hotel prevented one from getting scheduled in April
There are also conventions at new hotels in both the Kansas suburbs of Kansas City and the Des Moines metro area. The dates for these are July 19 and July 20, details are below. Hopefully this Kansas city hotel will both work out and be one that people want to come to, a difficult combination to attain in the past. In Des Moines the Ramada Inn where the con has been held for 6 years is undergoing a complete remodeling and the room we were using will not be available this year. I would have preferred not to move since the venue and staff at the hotel were great. However I also did not want to go for a year without a con in central Iowa.
On 31 May will have the first comic event in Rockford since at least the 1990s. It will be held at the Holiday Inn located at 7550 E State St . This is just off of the NW Tollway (aka I-90 / I-39) at the State St / Business Rt 20 EXIT. The Illinois Tollway does not have exit numbers.
June has a pair of new events. The first is on June 7 in Portage, Indiana. Portage is a suburb of Chicago and less than 20 miles from the stateline. The con will be at the Holiday Inn 2323 Willowcreek Rd. This one is easy to get to. It is just off the Indiana Tollroad (I-80 /90) EXIT 23. If you prefer not to take the Tollroad it is also easy to get to from I-94 take EXIT 19 and go south a couple of miles, the hotel will be on your left just before you hit the Tollroad.
The second new event in June will be in Waterloo / Cedar Falls, IA on June 22. The location for this one is also at a Holiday Inn. This one is located at 5826 University Ave in Cedar Falls. State Hwy 58 EXIT University Ave then go east. Sate Hwy 58 is the expressway that runs along the west edge of town connecting US Hwy 20 at the south to the Avenue of the Saints (US Hwy 218) in the north,
July will see the first Milwaukee Comic Convention with FREE admission. This will be at the Best Western Milwaukee Airport and Conference Center 5105 S Howell Ave. Just across form the airport, you can quickly get to the hotel off of I-94- take EXIT 318 get off at Howell Rd. Then go north, the hotel will be on your left.
Fans in Terre Haute, Indiana will have their first comic event since the 20th century on August 2. This will be held at the Days Inn located at 555 S Third St in Terre Haute. Remember if you are coming from Illinois, Indiana is on Eastern Time all year long now.
With all of these new events if the are well attended, they will be held on a regular basis.
(6 May) Gary Friedrich, best known to comic fans as the creator of Ghost Rider will be making a personal appearance at the next Springfield Comic Book Convention on August 24 from 10 AM to 4 PM. The convention will be at the normal venue, the Signature Inn (it may be a Jameson Inn by then) located at 3090 Stevenson Dr (I-55 @ Stevenson Drive (exit 94).
To celebrate his appearance the first 150 fans who show up will receive a free copy of the Gold Cover Variant of Ghost Rider 15 from the 1990's featuring a really cool glow in the dark cover!
Gary Friedrich appearing at the St. Louis Comic Book Convention in the summer of 2007!
Gary Friedrich was born Aug. 21.1943 in Jackson, Missouri, the son of Jerry and Elsie Friedrich. He attended Jackson public schools and graduated from Jackson High School in 1961. He was editor of the high school newspaper and a member of the marching band.
He met future Marvel Comics Editor Roy Thomas while both worked at the Palace Theatre in Jackson while they attended high school. They shared interests in rock and roll music, movies, books and of course, comics. They began reading DC superhero comics during the revival of the late Fifties and discovered the new Marvel comics of Stan Lee in the early Sixties. Friedrich also helped Thomas with early issues his fanzine, Alter Ego.
Also while in high school, Friedrich and Thomas began performing in rock and roll bands, first as Evetz Pretzel and the Transjordainaires and later as members of the Galaxies. Friedrich played drums and Thomas was vocalist.
After working as manager/buyer for the record dept. in a Cape Girardeau, Mo. music store for a couple of years, Friedrich became first a reporter, then managing editor of The Jackson Pioneer, a twice-weekly newspaper in his hometown. In November 1965, he moved to New York City at the invitation of Thomas, who'd moved there in the summer of that year and become associate editor for Stan Lee at Marvel. They roomed together for a time in late 1965 and early 1966 on Bleecker St. in Greenwich Village and for several months shared the apartment with Sub-Mariner creator Bill Everett, with whom they became close friends.
Friedrich worked in a Queens record store for this first few weeks in New York, then began writing first romance scripts, then superhero stories for Dick Giordono at Charlton Comics. Among the superhero magazines he worked on there were Blue Beetle with artist Steve Ditko and The Sentinels, with fan artist Sam Grainger .
In the spring and summer of 1966, he worked as an assistant to Woody Gelman and Len Brown at Topps Chewing Gum where he also met teenaged writer/artist to be Art Spieglman. While at Topps, he authored a series of Superman in the jungle bubble gum cards.
A staff opening occurred at the company which was then publishing Marvel comics in the fall of 1966, and Friedrich was hired as assistant editor under Lee and Thomas. In addition to working the staff position, Friedrich also began contributing freelance scripts to Marvel, starting with Millie the Model and various western titles like Kid Colt and Rawhide Kid.
He also teamed with Ayers on numerous issues of Marvel's "war mag for people who hate war mags", Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos. In writing Fury, Friedrich included a series of stories whose titles began with "The" such as "The War Love" and "The Peacemonger" which carried strong antiwar messages.
Friedrich also scripted sueprhero titles like The Hulk, Daredevil, Captain America, The X-Men and a Marvel Team-Up issue featuring Spider-Man. He also wrote an adaptation of Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" and several issues of Marvel's "Monster of Frankenstein" title.
He left his staff position at Marvel in the summer of 1968 but continued to write for them on a freelance basis, returning for a brief time in 1971 to read and answer fan mail.
From 1970 to 1971, he worked as managing editor of FOR MEN ONLY magazine and wrote numerous freelance stores and articles for the magazine. FOR MEN ONLY was published byMarvel parent company Magazine Management.
During this period, he co-authored two popular music encyclopedias with Len Brown. He also wrote a novel which was published in paperback.
Between 1968 and 1972, while doing freelance scripting for existing Marvel characters, Friedrich also began working to finalize an original idea of his own which he'd first begun to formulate as a youngster on viewing the movie "The Wild One." His idea was for a motorcycle-riding superhero who would somehow be connected with Satan. He continued to work on this idea in his spare time over the next few years.
By 1971, he'd finally fleshed out the full look and origin of the character, and at that time he approached Roy Thomas and Stan Lee about publishing a comic featuring his new hero. In the summer of 1971, an agreement was reached to publish and introduce the character in Marvel Spotlight #5.
Friedrich's new creation, the Ghost Rider, first appeared in 1972, drawn by Mike Ploog who later would work with Friedrich on the Frankenstein adaptation as well.
The character has continued to be popular over the years, culminating in a hit movie version which was released in early 2007. This film was released on DVD earlier this month. That movie and related products, however, were made and sold without any authorization or participation by Friedrich, who has filed suit against Marvel Comics, Columbia Pictures and others. At this time, the suit is pending.
He left the comics field in 1978 and worked for many years as a pioneer in the movie rental business in St. Louis, Missouri. He has worked for the past 12 years as a driver/courier in the St. Louis area.
Friedrich recently started his own company, Gary Friedrich Enterprises LLC, to market himself, his Ghost Rider characters and copyrights as well as other characters and copyrights. Friedrich currently lives in Jefferson County, Missouri (near St. Louis) with his wife Jean and daughter Leslie.
Green Bay dealers are happy they are not outside in the cold last March!
Ever come to a convention hoping to find that one special comic only to discover that none of the dealers have it? To make matters even worse a couple of the dealers told you they had it back home, but the guy is from out of state? This is not the type of thing that brings fond memories
I however have come with a cunning and brilliant plan to help solve this problem. This is a plan that is so cunning if you pinned a tail on it you'd think it was a fox! I have started a new service, where you the collector can email me with specific things you are looking for, that are hard to find. They can either be items that are genuinely rare (specific gold and silver age books) or ones that should be common but are in low demand so no dealers bother to bring them (Ultraverse comics). Items that are in high demand, such as Incredible Hulk 181, tend not to get left behind. These wants will be listed with your first name on the new wantlist page under the convention you are planning to go to. Dealers who are attending the convention can thus look at the page to see what fans are looking for and if they have it make sure they bring it
Since this is a new service, it may take a couple months before all the dealers get used to checking the page. Also please try to limit the number of items you send to a "reasonable" size. By this I mean a dozen or so specific issues or else general descriptions such as "Archie comics from the 1960s" or "Gold Key TV tie in comics". Also limit them to things you are willing to pay a fair market price for. It will discourage dealers from looking for and bringing the things you are looking for if someone finds a $20 comic book and discover that the collector is only willing to get it if it is in mint and a buck. Also remember to tell me which convention you are planning to attend, you wont do much good for a dealer to bring stuff you want to Des Moines when you are coming to Springfield
Hopefully this will work out, making the conventions more rewarding for both the dealers and the fans. E-mail me your wants at adm222@yahoo.com Note, depending where I am it may take a couple days for things to get listed. At present I am only doing this for the cons I run, these are the ones that are not in italics on the list. I suspect it will take awhile before both fans and dealers learn of this service
Bloomington / Normal collectors are happy to find what they want. They will have the chance to do so again on June 15!
Occasionally one of the conventions will be featured in the local newspapers. When I find out about them, I'll post links to the online versions here. Let me know if a link goes dead since some papers only keep free versions of their articles online for a limited period of time
Artist Sean Forney does a sketch at the very first Toledo convention last February!
Shows listed in italics are listed as a courtesy to the people running them, since many of our regular dealers set up at these events. I have no connection to them and am for the most part unable to answer questions about them. Contact phone number or websites are listed for these events. For information on events not in italics, prices and available dealer's tables or if you wish to be added to the postal mail list to get postcards sent as a reminder for future events in your area you can contact me (Alan) at adm222@yahoo.com

For a listing of conventions in other parts of the country check out: www.comicbookconventions.com/ NOTE This site has been experiencing some redesign difficulties and is either not working at all or not being properly displayed depending on what browser and OS you are using. It also does not get updated as frequently as it once wwas and often takes 2 to 3 months from the time an event is submitted to them for listing to when it is pt up on the site.
